“Me” – Wang Ying’s Solo Exhibition

Wang Ying is a woman of her own world. Her paintings are fragments of her life and the imaginings from them. It seems that every idea comes from daily life but in Wang Ying’s vision, they are gifted with a sense of spiritual magic which is fresh, interesting and unexpected. She goes beyond the constraints of the academic artistic stereotype, the style endows her work with a free “cardiogram pattern”. This is strongly shown in the line drawings of her early work where untraceable pen lines bring people into Wang Ying’s fantasy world to feel the pure freedom. Early surrealism and the theory of Psychic Automatism, ‘being free from control of reasons, independent of any aesthetic or moral preoccupation to discover the innocence of the real process of thought’ with continual lines, is the best annotation of her paintings.

Line and colour are the themes of her paintings and she is able to deconstruct real life images into flat planes by instinct. During her study in Germany Wang Ying was attracted by the rich colours created by pastel, Compared with oil painting, the contradiction between pen and paper is retained and lines drawn continue without interruption. From these two points, she began her “pastel” paintings on paper, the tension so apparent in the earlier ink on paper works is retained while colour is controlled by her intuition. Influenced by western abstract masters, her painting language is gradually internationalised with the shape simplified and the tone more elegant. Wang Ying’s oil paintings re interpret the most ordinary of daily objects and represent an experimental development. They link the high- art of abstract painting with the low- art intimacy of ordinary life. The style between abstraction and representation is both a breakthrough after Wang Ying’s previous work and a kind of sublimation of her painting language.
Wang Ying is not restricted by any theory or doctrine. She persistently represents her life fragments and sweet memories in her free expression on paper and canvas. Her passion for life and purity of soul are reflected in her paintings fiercely but also naturally, providing visitors a fairyland in the tiring contemporary visual environment.
